His hands were shaking as he tipped the pitcher of beer to its side, his eyes blinking as he tried to focus on getting the last dregs of the cheap draft into his mug. Sam drew a deep breath and slumped across the beer stained table like a worn out bar rag.

“Dammit Dean,” Sam choked back a burp that smelled bad even to him. “I need you. I can’t do this without you.”

“Course you can’t Sammy,” the familiar voice of his brother rang in his ear.

Sam batted at the touch of cold breath on his ear. “You’re not here. You’re dead. Go away.”

The chair across from him scrapped and Sam saw someone straddle the back of it after flipping it around. “You need to make up your mind little brother. Do you want me here or not?”

“Dean?” Sam wiped his running noise and eyes with the back of his sleeve. He wanted to sit up and look at Dean, but he was just too drunk to manage it. “You’re dead. It’s been 375 days, remember?”

“Oh I remember,” Dean chuckled darkly as he got back up from the chair, his long legs encased in supple black suede pants. “Trust me, when they drag you down to Hell kicking and screamin’ you don’t forget.” Dean grabbed Sam’s collar and pulled his little brother until he was upright in the chair. With a flick of his finger the beer pitcher refilled before Sam’s bleary bloodshot eyes. Dean frowned at the dirty crust at the bottom of Sam’s mug, then shrugged as he filled it with the fresh brew. “Here have a drink on me.”

Sam took the mug from Dean. His eyes locked to Dean’s fingers as they brushed against his hand. They were warm and dry. They didn’t feel at all like they did when Dean slipped into the cold oblivion of death just ten days before. “I blew it Dean. I couldn’t save you. I’m sorry.”

“Hell, don’t be sorry, Sam. It’s not so bad really,” Dean cast a cocky smile at his little brother as a bottle of Jack Daniels appeared at the table next to a clean shot glass. Dean filled the glass without spilling a drop and tossed back the shot before filling it back up. “I got a pretty cushy gig. You see, Sam, the Devil. She likes me. She always has. Gave me a sweet little job, and I’ve even got a corner office with a window. And the girls, damn Sammy, the girls are incredible.”

“But, but,” Sam stammered as Dean once again pushed the mug of cold beer into his hand. “I thought you’d be…”

“What in chains? Bein’ punished for killing all those monsters? Hell, the way she sees it I was just culling the failures. The Devil isn’t too fond of failures, Sam. That’s why she wanted me.” Dean leaned across the back of the chair he was straddling and whispered to Sam. “She wasn’t too happy with Ole Yellow Eyes either. She wanted him to take me, not you. But he was afraid I’d kill him. Guess he was right, huh?” Dean let out a laugh that was answered by a clap of thunder that shook the old roadhouse.

“But what about dad?” Sam took a small sip of the beer, and then tanked it down like it was mother’s milk. It was frosty, and just perfect. It might have been the best beer he’d ever tasted. “Where’s dad?”

“Dad? Well truth be told, she ain’t so fond of him. But I’m not here about dad, Sammy boy. I’m here about you.” Dean leaned back and stretched out his legs. His dark eyes scanned the crowd of has-beens and never-weres that filled the drab place. “Shit Sammy, leave it to you to get hammered in a pit like this. There isn’t a single girl in here well that doesn’t have a hairier face than you do.”

“Nice, Dean, very nice.” Sam pulled himself up straighter and raked his fingers through the unruly mop of his hair. “I didn’t come here to get laid. I came here to forget.”

“How’s that workin’ for you?”

“Not so good, although my hallucination is apparently buying me much better beer than I can afford.”

“Oh you think you’re imagining me then?” Dean smiled eyes sparkling. “Let’s go test that theory college boy.”

Sam just arched his eyebrows in response.

Dean suddenly appeared at Sam’s side and yanked the keys to the Impala out of his brother’s pocket. “If I’m a hallucination, I won’t be able to drive MY car. And don’t be so suspicious.”

“Dean you just told me you work for the Devil and the Devil’s a woman. Why wouldn’t I be suspicious?”

“Ah there you are. There’s my little paranoid brother. She’s not just a woman, Sam, she’s gorgeous, long legs, long dark hair and the brightest blue eyes, cute little British accent too.”

“So you’re her errand boy now? What does she want?”

“She wants me to help you, Sammy. She wants to give you seven wishes.”

“Seven? What happened to three?”

“I talked her into seven, like I said she likes me.” Dean pulled on Sam’s arm, and started to lead his taller brother out of the bar. “She gave you four extra. Now what do you want to wish for first?”

“I don’t know, Dean. I’m not sure this is a good idea. The Devil never gives anything away for free.”

“Well no, she doesn’t, but what harm would it be for you to use up one of those wishes?” Dean sniffed at Sam’s sweat stained clothes and wrinkled his nose. “Now if I was you, I’d use one of those wishes for a hot shower and a change of clothes.”

“Fine, Dean,” Sam yanked his arm free of Dean’s grip, failing against the fender of the Impala. “I wish I had a hot shower and some clean clothes. There! Happy!”

“Your wish is my command, little brother. Get in, and roll down the window. You fucking stink.” Dean climbed into the driver’s seat. He ran his hands over the steering wheel like he was caressing a lover, no not caressing, worshipping a goddess. As he rolled down the window, the dirt and grime that had built up on the car, almost as badly as it had on Sam, shimmered away until she was a sleek black predator once again.

Dean gunned the engine and flipped the car around in a 180 degree turn taking the narrow country road at over 100 miles per hour. He gazed in the rear view mirror as they passed a police cruiser and just smiled as the car picked up even more speed leaving a wake in the asphalt behind them like he was driving over black water.

Dean’s smile broadened as he came to a sudden stop in front of a motel. Sam looked up and read the sign over the parking lot, Motel 666. Dean waited for Sam to climb out of the car, and walked to the manager’s office. “I need a room, with two beds and a shower.”

“How long do you want it?” The wizened creature at the desk asked.

“A few days.” Dean leaned against the desk and buffed his nails against the soft gray chambray shirt he was wearing. “Well pay the man, Sammy.”

“Pay him? I thought this was my wish? Shouldn’t you be paying for it?”

“Uh nope,” Dean held his empty hands out. “You didn’t wish for the money to buy a shower and clothes. You just wished for a hot shower. You have to pay for it. Wishes are particular like that. You’ll need to be real careful with the other six.”

“Six?” Sam grumbled as he pulled a pair of wrinkled bills out of his jean’s pocket. “I thought I had seven.”

“You used one, now you’ve got six left. You go take your shower, and I’ll go get you some clothes. Then you can tell me your next wish.” Dean patted Sam on the back and then folded in on himself like he was made of paper until he was gone.

“Here’s your key, kid,” the thing said as it slid the key to number 13 across the desk.

Dean paused before the chain link fence that nearly as rusty as the piles of cars stored behind them. He listened carefully, wondering where the junkyard dog was that he’d seen that afternoon when he’d come through the main gate to buy a part for the Impala. It had been a silly thing to look for. The car was in such bad shape, that he really had no idea if she was ever going to be able to hit the road again. But with Sam and his dad in the hospital, he just needed something to do to keep busy.

Now he was there around midnight, a weapons bag slung over his shoulder, because of something he’d seen in the shadows behind some of the car corpses. “Come on Scooby, where the hell are you?” He was sure the dog was going to try to take his face off. But there was no barking, no growling, it was just too damned quiet. The only sound was the wind rustling the chain link occasionally.

He jumped as high as he could, and scrambled over the top landing on the damp ground on the other side as sure footed as the things he had come to kill. He knew she was there. He’d have recognized that car anywhere. The vampires thought they were so cool, so slick and the supreme hunters. But they hadn’t been counting on Dean’s knowledge of classic cars.

Kate was there, and he had a machete smeared with dead man’s blood with her name on it. Her mate had nearly killed Sammy, and they’d been forced to waste a bullet from the Colt to stop him. Now it had all gone to hell, and he was going to make that bitch pay.

Crouched low, he slipped between the stacks of tons of Detroit steel that had gone to the great beyond. He pulled out the machete. He knew he was being stupid for hunting her during the night, but he wanted her to be awake when he killed her.

She looked down at the boy from her perch on top of an Olds Cutlass. Her brown hair was hanging limp around her pale face, and there was more loneliness in her eyes than there was anger. Killing Dean Winchester was just what the doctor ordered. To have her belly filled with his blood would be a dream come true, but there was just one problem. She didn’t want to kill him. She wanted to keep him.

“Hello Dean,” she said as she dropped to the ground behind him. Her hand darted out to catch his wrist before he could cut into her with the machete. “I’ve been waiting for you to find me.” As she squeezed, Dean brought his knee up trying to catch her in the crotch. “Did you forget I was a girl, Dean?” She laughed as his wrist snapped and she kicked the machete out of the way.

“Really?” Dean snarked back pulling out a knife with a wicked curved blade from his other pocket. “I just thought you were a bitch.”

“Oh I’m a bitch,” she chuckled, her eyes glowing in the sudden moonlight as her mouth filled with more fangs than he could count. “I also think you and I are going to make beautiful music together. Tell you what though. I’ll give you a head start. Run little boy, run like the wind Dean.” She was still laughing when she heard him hit the gate unable to clime it with his broken wrist. “A killer like you, Dean, is wasted on humanity. You should be one of us.”

“I won’t be like you.” Dean drove the knife deep into her guts and twisted as she grabbed him tight against her. He knew it wasn’t enough, but wanted to make sure that she hurt when she took him.

Kate hissed in pain as the knife tore into her. “You already are like me.” She grabbed him by the back of the neck, and forced his face into the wound. “Now be a good boy, and kiss it to make it better.”

He watched from the shadows as the woman slept, her long hair twined about the pillow while the boy twitched from the nightmares that were haunting him once again. A smile glimmered on its face for a moment before the black smoke seeped out the window as Sam Winchester sat up with a cry in his bed, the cheap Walmart sheets falling down his naked chest.

“Sam?” Jess opened her eyes and reached out to him. He was covered in a cold clammy sweat, making his badly cut dark hair cling to his face. He shivered when she touched him, started a bit, before he recognized who she was, and where he was. “Did you have another nightmare?” Stupid girl, she mentally berated herself. Of course it was a nightmare. You don’t wake up like that when you’ve had a good dream.

Sam drew up his long legs tangling them even worse in the sheets. He’d been hoping to be able to get out of the bed, to pace out the nervousness and agitation of the dream, but now he was trapped. “I’m sorry I woke you up, Jess,” he let her wrap her fingers in his and returned the squeeze.

“You’re having more and more of them. Are you sure you shouldn’t take a break from school? I think the stress is getting to you?”

“Taking a break’s not going to get me into law school.” He kissed her fingers and yanked the covers from his legs, getting up to pace towards the window. He felt his skin pebble as he stood where the demon had been, but didn’t know why. “You go back to sleep. I’m going to go take a shower.” He thought about calling Dean. He missed having his brother there when he woke up scared in the middle of the night. Dean knew what kind of horrors were out there, and he’d understand. But calling Dean meant having to talk to his father, and he just wasn’t ready to do that.

There were dark circles under his eyes when he looked in the bathroom mirror while he waited for the hot water to finally get to the shower before stepping in. He closed the thin white shower curtain behind him, and waited for the haunting images of Jesse pinned to the ceiling and being burned to death to wash away down the drain.

Author's Notes: slight spoiler for Dean Man's Blood/Devil's Trap

A small delicate string of brass bells rang as John Winchester pushed open the door to the Witchcraft shop in Eureka. The owner didn’t try to blend in with the current rage, and call it a New Age store or pretend it was anything other than what it was. Exotic incenses filled the air, their smoke curling and twining as they were drawn towards the slowly revolving ceiling fan. Every bit of wall space was covered in shelves, and every inch of those was covered with books, trinkets, and jars of herbs and bottles of essences.

John had been in places like this all over the country, but he’d never been to this one before. Pastor Jim had told him the owner might be able to help him with his quest. Revenge on the Demon that had killed his wife and nearly murdered his son, Sam, was the only thing that mattered to John on most days. Today wasn’t any different.

She came out of the back of the shop dressed in a snug fitting burgundy top with peasant sleeves and a long black skirt with black lace peeking from beneath. Her hair was left long and loose, hanging in rich auburn locks over her bared shoulders. But it was her eyes that made him stop in his tracks. They were the deepest brown with hints of topaz, and they held him mesmerized until she cleared her throat.

“Can I help you?” she asked, cocking her head to the side slightly as she gave him the once over. She knew who he was. The underground had told her he was coming. They hadn’t told her everything though. John Winchester was a fine looking man even with his haunted eyes filled with seeing too much that no mortal man was meant to see.

“Pastor Jim sent me,” he said gruffly like he wasn’t used to using his voice. “Said you had something that might be able to help me.”

“Come on in back,” she said after gliding past him to put the Closed sign up in the front window and locking the door. Catching his suspicious glance she laughed. “You’re not afraid of me are you John Winchester?”

“No,” he said feeling the weight of the revolver that he had shoved into the back of his waistband. “I’m not afraid of you?”

She knew the question was an invitation to tell him her name. “I’m Vivian,” she said as she slipped past him again. “This is my place. What you’re looking for is in the back.” The curtain was heavy velvet brocade with Asian dragons twining over it. Vivian pulled it back to reveal her working area. There was a wide round table, covered in tarot cards and a purple throw with a Celtic pentacle in the middle of it.

“’Fraid I don’t have time for a tarot reading,” John growled.

“That’s not why you’re here,” Vivian pulled a large parchment filled book from her desk, the pages were worn at the edges and something about the book made John shiver when he touched it. “There’s a story in there about a demon killing children when they reach six months old. I’m still trying to find out why it does it, but Pastor Jim said your boy was that age when the Demon took his mother.”

John sat down on the sofa next to the table with the book balanced on his knees while Vivian spread out the tarot cards. He didn’t notice as her eyes shone like a cat’s in the darkness. When he was finished reading through her notes, he sat the book on the floor and rubbed at his face. She came over and sank down besides him, reaching over and brushing his dark hair out of his face. “I know it’s a horrible story. I’ll find out more about him. It almost happened to me,” she said leaning closer to him, letting him smell her perfume. “My father saved me too. My mother was a witch, just like I am.” John felt his heart racing as her breath touched his cheek. He turned towards her instead of away like he usually did. It had just been so damned long.
